Airway Clearance and Cough Control
Some respiratory conditions cause our lungs to produce more mucus which can become sticky and difficult to clear. Retained mucus increases risk of infection, increases shortness of breath and in turn decreases your health and quality of life.
Respiratory Physiotherapists are trained to work with you to find the best method of clearance to help you clear your lungs and allow you to return to an active lifestyle. Cough hypersensitivity can be a side effect of airway clearance. Cough is a normal physiological response to an irritation in your airways. However, when a cough persists for longer than 8 weeks it becomes labelled as chronic.
Chronic cough can be caused by a variety of factors, most commonly:
- Respiratory disease such as COPD, Asthma, Bronchiectasis
- Reflux.
- Laryngeal sensitivity.
- Post-nasal drip.
